1. JAMES5 WOFFORD (ABSALOM4, WILLIAM3, WILLIAM2, WILLIAM1) was born September 03, 1743 in Rock Creek, Frederick County, Maryland, and died July 14, 1815 in Spartanburg District, South Carolina. He married ANNA KATHARINA HOPPAUGH September 13, 1769 in Spartanburg District, South Carolina. Notes: "Although a man of small stature and in ill health, he served faithfully through the struggle for independence under the command of Colonel Benjamin Roebuck, whose organization took part in the battles of Musgrove Mill, Kings Mountain, Cowpens, and Mud Lick." Records show he served in the Revolution as a Captain. South Carolina was originally divided into four Colonial Counties, one of which was Berkeley County. In 1765 South Carolina was divided into seven districts, one of which was Ninety-six District out of part of Berkley County. 96 District was comprised of the Union and Spartanburgh Counties.
