Generation No. 6

DANIEL6 WOFFORD (ABSALOM5, WILLIAM4, WILLIAM3, WILLIAM2, WILLIAM1) was born November 22, 1778 in Pendleton, South Carolina, and died October 30, 1846 in Georgia. He married TEMPRANCE MCGEHEE December 05, 1808 in Jackson County, Georgia. Notes: Daniel Wofford migrated to Georgia to what at that time was Jackson County, which was created in 1796, its western boundry being the Appalanchee River. Jackson County gained territory December 7, 1812 with the "Wofford Settlement" from the Augusta Treaty of 1783. On December 19, 1818, Jackson County lost territory to Hall County. This included the "Wofford Settlement." The history of this settlement is that in the treaty with the Cherokee Indians, October 24, 1804, the tribe ceded a four-mile wide tract known as "Wofford's Settlement," mostly in what is now Hall and Habersham Counties. It extended 23 miles by 4 miles. Daniel registered again in 1820, for the 1820 Land Lottery of Georgia. This time he drew a prize chip and won a 250 acre section of land in Early County in Southern Georgia, about 80 miles north of Florida on the Alabama border. Daniel purchased 250 acres in Hall County on July 16, 1823. He purchased another 250 acres on November 8, 1825, in Hall County, and 250 acres in Hall County on December 20, 1837. His wife Temprance was born in 1793 in North Carolina, to Jesse McGehee. After Daniel's death in 1846, Temprance, better known as "Tempee," continued to live on the land given to her by Daniel, and raise her children until her death, October 7, 1850. Wofford, married and lived on 250 acres willed to him and located next to the main farm, where Temprance continued to bring the children up. In late 1857, Jacob, at the age of twenty-one, married Nancy Miller, the twenty-one year old daughter of Henry Miller and his wife, a tenant farmer who lived on a farm adjoining James' farm. Jacob and Nancy lived in the family homestead on the 250 acre farm Daniel left in his will. On January 12, 1863, Jacob bought 148 acres in Hall County, Ga from Ausbon Seay, making his holdings total 400 acres. Very little information of what happened to Nancy after 1865 has been found at this time. We do know that Jacob's brother, James and Nancy's parents, the Henry Miller family, were located in Meigs County, Tennessee according to the 1870 census. The location of Nancy is not known for this same period of time, during 1870. She may have remarried after Jacob's death. Jacob was twenty-five when the Civil War broke out. At that time he and his wife, Nancy, lived in Hall County, Ga., located just southeast of Gainsville, Georgia. Jacob joined the Confederate Army, Company E, 18th South Carolina Infantry Regiment in late 1863. He participated in the Battle of Charlston, Second Manassas, and Petersburg, where Jacob was captured by the Union Army.
